Keep the Heat Out During the Day
One of the easiest ways to keep your home cool is to stop the sun’s heat from getting inside in the first place. Close your curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day. If temperatures drop in the evening, open your windows once the sun goes down to let cooler air circulate through your home. Be careful leaving windows open and lights on though, you might invite inside some unwanted creepy crawlies.
Make the Most of Airflow
If you have a room in your home that has windows on opposite sides, open them to create a cross-breeze. If you only have one window, place a fan facing outwards to help push warm air outside while drawing cooler air in from other openings.
Portable fans don’t actually cool the air, but they help your body feel cooler by increasing airflow. For an extra boost, place a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of the fan to create a refreshing cooling effect.
Switch Off Heat-Producing Appliances
Many everyday appliances generate more heat than you might realise.
During a heatwave, try to:
- Turn off lights when they’re not needed
- Avoid using the oven during the hottest part of the day
- Use the microwave, air fryer or slow cooker instead of the oven where possible
- Unplug electronics that aren’t in use, as many continue producing heat even on standby
These slight changes can also help reduce your electricity usage while keeping your apartment more comfortable.
Choose Lightweight Bedding
A good night’s sleep can be difficult when it’s hot indoors.
Swap heavier duvets for lightweight cotton sheets, which are naturally more breathable than synthetic fabrics. Cotton or linen pillowcases can also help keep you cooler throughout the night. You can even place your pillowcase or bedsheet in a sealed bag in the freezer for a short time before bed for an extra cold pillow at night.
Stay Hydrated!!!
Keeping yourself cool is just as important as cooling your Simple Life London home. Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty. Keep a reusable water bottle nearby and consider storing it in the fridge so you always have a cold water ready.
Heatwaves don’t have to make living uncomfortable. By blocking out direct sunlight, improving airflow, reducing indoor heat and making a few simple adjustments to your daily routine, you can keep your home cooler while staying comfortable all summer.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.
